Claure: Merger would put Sprint “in a very good position”

Ah, M&As. AT&T can pull one off with DirecTV. In modern history, T-Mobile batted one A and struck out on not just one, but two Ms. And its been playing around for more. Sprint was part of one of those failed hookups. In stark contrast to “Carrier Pink’s” rising star, “Carrier Yellow’s” fortunes are still on the slide. It might be the case that Sprint, the company which took a beating for its acquisition of Nextel and is getting life support from its current majority shareholder — at 82 percent — Softbank, is in greater need of one of these power moves.

Marcelo Claure, Sprint CEO, tends to agree. In an interview, he said that a cable company combination would create “a stronger and more formidable competitor” in Sprint. This is after Netherlands-based telecom company Altice made its entry into the US market and after its CEO, Patrick Drahi, dreamed aloud the possibility of a cell provider get-together, maybe even offering a TV/fixed internet/landline/cellular package all at once. But there are more movers and shakers doing the tango in the cable and satellite industry. And they might be jumping into the wireless fight as well.

“I think it’s going to be exciting times ahead in terms of consolidation but we don’t have any conversations with anybody,” Claure said.
